So a groundhog or mouse thought he'd do me a favor and reduce the weight of my car by chewing through 1/2 a dozen wires and hoses in the engine bay of my Leggy GT.
So, 3200 miles and back at Subaru.
Anyone else EVER have this issue? I thought an outback worthy car would be exept from this kind of problem lol...

Update: given the choice of a. new wiring harness + other parts + labor for around 800, or b. have the mechanic as subaru splice some wires for 300, I went with choice b. We'll see how CVM (Cumberland Valley Motors) does electrical work :)

I'd make sure you get a good look-see at where the wiring was damaged, and then again after the repairs are done.
I've seen some *really* shoddying wiring done by supposed experts...nothing better than just strip-and-braid and cover with tape. :(
Because of the intricacies of modern electronics - and even moreso when it comes to the vehicle's all-important electrical/computer governing systems - you should exercise extreme care when signing-off on the work. A shoddy job can not only affect the performance of your car (yes, performance...trust me on this one -> for example: you don't want any electrical interference on, say, the line to the ECU that monitors the knock-sensor, or else your car will pull timing like crazy, and even drop IAM down to the point you can only get wastegate boost [or worse, go into limp mode]), but also safety (i.e. electrical fire).
Make sure that the dealership will back the work done, too, with their own warranty/guaranty.

No worries, the wires involved running useless things like the fuel injectors and the crank. Nothing serious like the lights or anything....

Wouldn't this be covered under insurance or warranty?
If so, I'd go for the harness.
Unfortuneately, rodent damage is not covered under warranty.
Little tiny rabbits sometimes even chew through new cars while stting on the new car lot and when a customer wants to test drive it, the check engine light comes on, runs like ****, and then the customer is like, what the ****, this is a new toyota and it is ****! and then sometimes the car wont even start, so we have to tow it into the shop and then look all through the engine bay, looking for chewed up wires and ****, and then, since we here at toyta are professionals and NEVER do a stoddy job, we find the cut wires, get similar colored wires from other wire harnesses that are laying around the shop, and then add wires with shooder and the hot thinggy, and then shrink wrap them and then tape them up and then it is all well and dandy. I dont know if the customer who buys that car is informed of the rodent damage or not, but i hope they were, cuz it would suck if it came back for problems and then the customer's warranty is declinded for wire repairs and stuffs.
I think the ittle should change to OM Nom Nom Nom??

^ Er.....
That's actually more concerning, well, at least for me.
The lights blinking out or something, at least you could still "limp" home.
The injectors failing - and other engine-control parameters.....
I'd MAKE SURE that this work was done well.
Electrical interference where there shouldn't be any, along the engine-control lines, is just asking for disaster.
thats unfortunate.

Yea... $500 and I got it back. 15 miles from the dealership i got the [S] and CRUISE blinking and CHECK ENGINE is glowing steady. Last thing I need before I take exams/roadtrip to interview for my carreer.
I'm a very angry boy with Cumberland Valley Motors in Mechanicsburg, PA.

Pull (but do not reset) the code. Go to a local AutoZone, if you don't have a datalogger or OBD-II scanner, they'll pull the code for you, for free.
If it's something small, like, for example, a loose gas cap (the blinking cruise + steady CEL should indicate an emissions-system related issue, which could be just a loose gas cap; however, you should get the code pulled before doing this, as it could pertain to OTHER emissions control systems, such as your air-pump, or even the wiring for say, one of your O2 sensors that either got chewed and was overlooked, or was improperly repaired), just take care of it yourself - then reset the computer by pulling the battery negative.
If it's something more serious, document the code (heck, take a digicam with you, and take a picture of it), and then go to your dealer. See if they're honest about what code came up.
And if the trouble is associated with the replaced wiring, insist that they credit you the $500 for the proper fix - the actual replacement of the damaged components, and not a hack wiring job (which was what I'd feared).
Like I said, our vehicles are EXTREMELY dependent on the right signals coming from its various sensors as well as going out of the ECU. Botched wiring (from faulty splices to shoddy soldering to electrical-interference from ill-conceived wiring runs) can cause both PERFORMANCE problems, as well as actual safety issues.

My concern at the time/still was being able to drive 250 miles for 2 job interviews in my home state. Supposedly the senior tech did the work, but he seems to always do the work for me, am I that lucky??? ugh... Yea, it'll probably end up being a new wiring harness if it is something to do with the wiring.
Thanks for the idea, I'm going to AutoZone now to check that option... see what's making Maddie upset.

And no worries, I'm a real **** when it comes to this, I'm no pushover, so I'll do my best to get the job done right. Interviewing and Exams make this a pain in the ass right now though.
Keep you informed :)

P2093 - Without all of the details basically the wire is shorting or getting interference... also something about an OCV Valve Solenoid.

^ Sounds like some sort of wiring issue - I'd doubt that the car's got anything wrong with it, mechanically, as you'd brought it it after the wiring got chewed...it would only be logical to assume that the wiring "repair" is the cause of your new CELs....

So... update: The wires seem to be holding, no new harness though :( Supposedly the animals created a short circuit which is tripping the computer, so a new computer is needed. Of course it wasn't a short generated by shoddy work... that's just silly...
When I make some monies I will get the harness fully replaced. Is there a better aftermarket harness that would end up costing roughly the same? Better gauge wires or anything?
Anyhow guys, more funny pictures on the subject would be excellent. I don't have to be monogamous with Ih8vtec13....

Update: 80 miles after new ECU and still with the patched up wires. Even did some jumps (sharp hills where if you go fast enough the car will leave the ground for a second or 5...) so everything is holding together :)
Still going to get the new wiring harness some day, sucks that I kinda needed the car ASAP at the time.
So this thread is more or less closed.
