Hey!

new to the scene and i have a few questions. well i recently sold my modded 97 GTP and i am missing the speed. (i am currently driving a 02 monte carlo http://forum.mazda6club.com/style_emoticons/default/38.gif )

I was originally looking at buying (http://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?showtopic=117055#) a Subaru WRX STI or a Mitsu Lancer EVO. A buddy of mine then told me to look into buying a Mazda (http://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?showtopic=117055#) Speed 6 or a Subaru Legacy GT. Well after looking into it, i think that this is the route i am planning on going.

A few question before i buy though:

Is there a reason to buy the LGT over a WRX?

IIRC i read that the LGT and the WRX have the same motor except the LGT has a slightly smaller turbo, is this correct?

What is the factory turbo on a LGT? what is it capable of?

about how much money does it take to get into the 12's on a 14 mile?

about how much money would be needed to break the 300-350 awhp mark?

How much power (http://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?showtopic=117055#) is the motor/trans capable of before failure (daily driver)?

What are the biggest drawbacks, negatives of the LGT (anything)?

**sorry for all of the questions but i am trying to read and and do my homework before i actually buy one.

My opinions to follow.

Buy the LGT over the STI for the creature comforts. And it makes a great sleeper. The STI is (INMSHO) a boy racer car, whereas the LGT is a bit more stylish, nicer interior, and not such a cop magnet.

The LGT and the STI share a common longblock. For some reason I believe the LGT uses different pistons. Yes, the LGT turbo (IHI VF40) is smaller than the WRX part.

I believe some over at legacygt.com have come close to 300 awhp on the stock turbo, but don't quote me on that.

No idea on how much it'd cost to get into the 12s.

My car is right around 400 awhp & 400 ft/lbs, and the cost for me was around $4k. I did all of the work so I didn't have to pay someone to install the parts.

The skin and paint on the car are both too damn thin. If I stare too hard at my car it'll dent or scratch. :) My '05 with 53k miles has developed its share of squeaks and rattles - that's annoying.

Did I mention that the LGT is a perfect sleeper? :)

Good luck with your purchase.

Main selling point 4 me over the WRX was u can't get 4 6fters in a WRX, in an LGT it's no problem.

Get a TBE and an UP if u get an 05-06 and then get a Protune and see where you're @.

what kind of times could it run possibly with a TBE and UP?

If u wanna get an idea of what LGTs can do @ the track this is probably your best resource. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=38

If you are looking for a track monster, I'd suggest something other than a legacy unless you have a large mods budget.

^ +1.

I'd go the easy route, and go Evo, if that was the goal.

The LGT, in my opinion, is a more "liveable" vehicle than either the Evo or the WRX (including WRX STi/STI variants) - there's more cabin refinement, less NVH, and also more room (although still tight). It's a trade-off that you'll have to decide whether or not it's worth it, for you, not only in terms of overall sportiness/speed, but also budget (parts for the LGT tend to be higher in price, and the upgrades less-performance-for-the-dollar than compared to either the WRX or STi/STi, or, alternatively, the Evo).

Overall, if you're looking at the WRXs, I would not look at the 2.0L WRXs as comparable models - only the 2.5L models of the immediate-previous production years. It will take a lot more to bring the performance level of the 2.0L models up to that of the 2.5L.

Similarl, I would not look at the MazdaSpeed 6. Althogh that's one of my favorite vehicles, its upgrade path is not nearly as well defined or probed as that of the other vehicles that you've mentioned in your opening post.

^ It's not so much the piping - the hardware - but rather, what the freer-breathing piping will allow for, in terms of "more aggressive" engine management parameters, that brings out inherent performance in the previous-generation BL/BP Legacys.

What those pipes allow for is "Stage II" ECU remapping, which exploits close to the full potentials of the otherwise-factory BL/BP, turbocharged, factory setup.
