View Full Version : Dookster Has Bass!

Decided my stereo system needed extra bass, as my 6 1/2 speakers wasn't cutting it. Got a good deal on a 10" Kicker sub and my buddy and I built a standard box. The box is nothing to brag about, but my main objective is to get good quality bass sound. I don't use my trunk much, so I don't mind that it takes up a quarter of the space.

All I have to say is "Holy Sh!t". Had to turn down the gain because it was pounding way to hard, more than I expected it to. Now my system is complete.:D
Which amp are you using, and where did you mount it?

Nice!
I wish I had less use for my trunk! As-is, I barely fit all of our weekly groceries!

Still running the same amp that I use to power my 6 1/2's (Profile AP740 - 4 channel amp) under the drivers seat. Bridged channel 3 & 4 to get 180 watts max to the sub. The Kicker sub is rated for 150 RMS watts with a max of 300 watts, so it was the perfect fit for my build.

Wish I had my system outta of my Explorer...2 MTX 10's Infinity amp and a 4 farad digital cab...but it got stolen! Even when I had a cover and no one knew about it...plus I always turned it down before getting close to where I was going to park...F^CKING (park...F@CKING) BASTARDS! It would have been nice to have in my Leggy = (

It's been working great for the past 2 months until a few days ago, I've been hearing a thup sound coming from the subwoofer. It even happens when volume is turned all the way down. When looking at the speaker, every once in a while it would flex outward hard making the thup sound. Still sounds good, except the thup every so often.
So far I've check the speaker and everything looks good along with the wiring inside the box.
Next I need to check the wiring from the amp.
So, if everything checks out maybe it could be my amp not handling the load since I've bridged it to 2 ohms?
Any ideas?
What are the specs on the amp? That's my first suspicion.

Checked all wiring connections and couldn't find nothing loose. Hooked the sub back up and it ran good. Only ran it for a few mins though, I'll try running it longer tomorrow and see if maybe the amp is overheating causing the thupping sound.
Below are the specs to my amp. I'm running channels 3 & 4 bridged @ 2 ohms.

Yea, I plan on putting Subs in mine. I bought Polk Audio 6.5" componants in the front and 6.5" Polks in the back along with a Pioneer 100 x 4 (50 RMS) to power them. Should sound very nice! I just hope replacing the factory tweeters won't be a pain in the butt. Finally got an AP v2 on the way along with some 18x8" rims! Going to be a busy Spring :D Does anyone know if a STi up pipe will void my warranty with Subaru?

In regards to the amp, I would go with a better brand...I've heard that other people have had problems with that brand. I prefer MTX, Pioneer, and Infinity...I have never had any trouble with these brands. You can get really good amps for cheap...try typing in a brand name in Google then hit the Shopping tab.
I've always been a fan of SoundStream amps. My sub amp is a SoundStream "Reference Class A 6.0", an old 'cheater' amp, rated at 25 wpc into 4 ohms. But it will drive a 1/4 ohm load at something like 600 watts with it if one plays wiring tricks.
For satellites I have an Orion 4004. Sadly, none of the gear is in my car yet. I think that will be my summer project.

Dookie- That thumping is probably the amp going bad and taking it's anger out on the sub. If you check the sub and it measures fairly close to 4 ohms (low 3's to high 4's) and there's no friction in the sub when you push it straight in, it's most likely that pos amp. Sorry to be blunt, but you need a better amp. ;)

Thanks for the tip. Right now it's been working good, maybe I had a loose wire and retightening the connections must have done something right.

As you may already know, you want to make sure that the amp and the speakers wattage match the best you can make them. For instance I had 100 RMS Infinity Kappa 6X8's hooked up to a 50x4 RMS amp. Since the power rating was 50 watts off, it actually blew the tweeters in the speakers. I aslo had some MTX 10's that were 400 RMS hooked up to a Infinity amp that ran about 380 RMS to the subs and never had a problem (actually slammed pretty good for years!). Under powering a speaker is just as bad as over powering one. What are the RMS specs of your subs and the amp?

...and if this problem appeared suddenly, it's something that has changed. That means either the sub changed (getting tired), the amp changed (going out), or something was, indeed, loose.

I'm going with the something was loose option. (for now:o)

Its amazing what such a small sub is capable of. All Im runnin in my little Integra is a single Polk 10 in a small ported box. Rattles the hatch like mad when I turn up the sub gain.

Nobody has posted to this is some time and i am going through just about everything on here trying to figure out what i want to do with my car next. I just installed my subs that have been in three different cars with me. Got two 10" Eclipse Titanium subs in a ported box with a JL 500/1 amp. Dynamated the entire trunk as well. Hits harder in the leggy than it has hit in any other car i have put it in..... Sounds great and the dynamat keeps the sound inside the car. Sooooo nice, want to touch the hiney...

 Sweet, post some pics when done. Also, did you remove the 7" round plate from the rear deck to allow more sound into the cabin?

Huh? Why haven't I heard about this. My **** is loud enough as it is...but this sounds interesting. Link?
My 12" JL W3 finally blew.....It was so old (I bought it from a friend a couple years ago....and he had it for a few years). So I ended up with a 12" Kenwood....I have no idea what kind it is, my husband said it was a good speaker for the price so I got it  It hits just as much as my JL if not more.
Pioneer amp...no idea the soecs of that either.....my husband is the stereo guru.

Daaaaaamn girl, you have beat too?!?! :evilbanana: You're flossn'.
Yes, on the '05 there is a 7 inch round plate on the back deck. Once I removed it and the foam above it, the sound was nice and not muffled anymore. I believe the '06 has the same thing.

 Yea I haz beatz too!
I had 2 10" Rockford Fostgate P1s in a RF box in my last Legacy. It was waayyyy too big and took up my whole trunk so I sold it. Went about a year or two without and missed it so much that I got that JL from a friend.....I installed that about a year and a half ago and loving every minute :)
I have plenty of room. Amp is mounted to the back of the box.

Cool, a 10" woofer and a baby stroller.
I'm gonna be looking for a new amp soon, I think I'm pushing mine too much. Currently I have a 4 channel amp pushing 4 speakers & a sub. I looking for a 5 channel amp to where I can run a single channel to the sub.
btw - on my 1st post, look at the 2nd pic. The 7" plate is in the upper left hand side of the pic. At that time I haven't takin it off yet.
