View Full Version : Clutch
It was bound to happen sooner or later, and I'm pleasantly surprised that it lasted this long. I've been making 400+ awhp for a couple years, and have been on the original OEM clutch. The car never gets launched, but I do enjoy the occasional romp down the freeway on-ramp.
With almost 62k miles on the clutch, it finally let go yesterday. I did a 2nd & 3rd gear pull, backed off and did another 2-3 pull. Going into 3rd it just rev'ed and made that awesome smell.
Finally I get to replace it. I just wish I had all my pennies saved up for the parts. :)

Yep, it's gonna happen, eventually - and frankly, I'm also surprised at how much you got out of her!
So, what're you going to go with?
I'm surprised as well. I don't baby the car by any stretch of the imagination, but I have been driving cars with clutches since I got my permit. Never ride the pedal, etc etc etc. :)
I will be using this setup: http://www.fredbeansparts.com/index.php/act-hd-street-clutch-with-oem-subaru-single-mass-flywheel.html

Is running a lighter flywheel at your AWHP not good? Or you need a flywheel with more mass to hold up with it?
It's finally getting put in today by a local shop.
I forgot to order the TSK3 kit (http://www.fredbeansparts.com/index.php/subaru-legacy-gt-tranquil-tsk3-sleeve-kit.html) from Fred Beans, which finally arrived yesterday. Just stopped by the shop to check on my baby and the tech doing the work said it's going as smooth as can be expected. I bet he jinxed himself... :)
The friction disk still had a LOT of material left on it. The slipping was coming from the pressure plate - both it and the OEM flywheel had some nice hot spots on them.
That OEM Subaru clutch surprised me.

If a guy intended to launch the car, then a lightweight/lighter flywheel may not be a great idea. The mass of the flywheel stores a lot of energy, so less mass == less energy.
I went from a 34 lb dual mass to a 14 lb single mass in the supra years ago. Simply destroyed my ability to get the car out of the hope. However, it revved like a chainsaw, which was sorta fun. :)

I noticed long ago that one of the upgrades from the 2.5i to the GT was a dual-mass flywheel. What, exactly, is the benefit of more mass? It won't get as hot when launching?

^ I thought that was a pretty decent write-up.
Dual-mass flys are typically for NVH. :)

Indeed, good to know.
I'd forgotten what the increased pedal pressure was like. Only driven the car twice since the install, going to take some getting used to. :)

Came back fast, though.
