Doing first oil change on my 04 legacy, non gt, 93k miles, 5spd. no idea what the previous owner used in terms of reg. vs. synthetic. i'm in upstate NY so it's going to get a little colder during the next 3k miles, but not wintery yet..

also i need new shocks in the rear. would it be ridiculous for me to get them at advance auto/napa, etc?

thanks for the advice!

Whatever you are comfortable with. My current personal preference is "German" Castrol 0w30 synthetic. Since you are non-turbo, anything will do as long as your oil change interval is 3-4k miles. Whatever's on sale at walmart. :)

Dont use oil. It is bad for your car.

use canola.. us turbo cars use e.v.o.o.... Seriously though, you would be fine with regular 'auto' oil. You don't need synthetic, but it won't hurt either. Like John said, just change it on reg 3k to 4k mi intervals.

Synthetic isn't a bad idea if you're lazy about oil changes, but you're much better off just using regular oil and making sure you change it regularly. Your oil filter can only filter so many particulates before it stops really filtering any more. For about 6 months I ran expensive synthetic I changed myself so I would only have to change every 5-6K, but I found out that's not such a good idea. Just use whatever oil and whatever filter are cheap, and like the other guys said, make sure you change it often.

I use Castrol Synthetic and Subaru oil filters.

My Z/28 and Subaru get PYB and a factory filter. I am not really sold on synthetic, especially on a car that doesn't have high hp and see's alot of track time. Even then many of them can run ok with dino oil.

The best thing to do would be to get UOAs, and proceed accordingly.

There's nothing like actual quantifiable data. :)

I will go with German Castrol or Valvoline VR1.

I recently did a ton of research on this, and since I won't spend the money on anything like AMSOIL, I'll be using Valvoline Synthetic from now on.

I use Rotella T6 now. My husband read a bunch of things about it and now he swears by it. As long as my car gets some oil....I don't care
