I saw factory guage set that fits in middle of the dash above the read outs. Anyone have any info on this? Costs, etc...

It's a Subaru part and goes for 6-700 dollars.

^ "WTF" is definitely one way to say it. ;)

But another approach.....well.....

While there are aftermarket gauges that offer the initial start-up sweep as well as a close color-rendering to the stock LGT electroluminescent cluster, the combination of these, PLUS a three-in-a-row fitment in this particular dash area, is all but impossible to find.

Add to this consideration the thought of OEM, or better, quality of componentry (and remember, the SPT/STi cluster, if installed by the dealer - granted, this is going to cost $$$ - will retain your full factory warranty), and, well, there really is nothing else that even comes close.

Sure, you can procure DEFI (and to-note, this particular cluster is contract-made by DEFI, for SPT/STi) Link gauges or AutoMeter NEXUS gauges (or await the release of the upcoming MadDad gauges with such functions) - which will provide additional functionality as well as additional cosmetic enhancements - but for a three-gauge setup, NOT INCLUDING ANCILLARY MOUNTING SOLUTION COSTS, you'd be looking at well in excess of $800....actually, more than likely will be in the $1,000 range, especially when galley/sender adaptors are taken into account.

Is it expensive? Certainly.

But all things considering, I do not think that it is unfairly priced, either. :)

All those points considered, I will agree that the cost is not out of the realm of sanity. I think I'm going back to the days of $20 O/P guages in my 69 Camaro. Using that as a basis for cost analysis made the OMG meter snap the needle. I have spent too much on this puppy over the last few weeks and need to start looking at the best bang for the buck where mods are concerned now.
Thanks for the details TSi...I can always count on them from you.

^ :) NP - and you're right, while not out of the realm of sanity, the price certainly does bridge over into the realm of the somewhat surreal.

Definitely, if you're looking for some kind of advanced cosmetic tricks (which is the case with this DEFI-sourced SPT/STi cluster) or recording functionality (not available with this cluster, but with my other examples above), you're looking at a higher price tag.

But if all you're looking for is a basic (yet good -to- near-exact) color-match to the stock instruments - and maybe even a sweep-start function, you can actually procure "decent" generic pieces off even sources like eBay.

While sender quality/reliability and overall quality-control may be a concern for such low-dollar pieces, overall, most people have fared pretty well with such purchases, everything considered, and it's definitely a viable alternative.

Otherwise, the various mechanical and electrical AutoMeters - as well as various non-recording/advanced functions DEFI, MadDad, etc. - gauges are always a good stand-by, and are a good compromise between cost and both function/reliability and aesthetics.

if you had to choose between the gauges and the navigation system, which would you rather have in that small space then? or just nothing at all and get aftermarket products instead?

gauges are more useful to me...and I still have none...

Gauges. :) But then again, I'm a confessed gauge-whore.

I'd go aftermarket - DEFI.

But if "integration" is important to you, the factory "STi" gauges would definitely look the most "stock." However, with CasopoliS's Cubbypods and a careful selection of gauges, I honestly think that you could achieve a very toned-down, near-"stock" look with just about any aftermarket choice.
