I want to upgrade my clutch.
what should I get?
does this sound good?
- Brand new (never used) Act Performance clutch disk ($135 shipped) + RS type clutch fork ($45 shipped) + Act release bearing ($15 shipped) + new pilot bearing ($10 shipped).
How much power does the clutch need to hold?

A stock clutch will hold. Not sure how your stock clutch has already went out you clutch rider.

There's definitely cases where higher-mileage '05s at typical "Stage II" power-levels have gone through their factory clutch already. Only a handful on .com, but it's definitely not unheard of - IMveryHO, it's probably at least somewhat related to the "clutch stink" and various other clutch-related issues that were seen on a small percentage of '05s.
Along with several others who've openly disclosed their driving habits, I'm also one of the lucky ones, it seems, whose stock clutch from an early-make '05 has withstood typical "Stage II" power-levels and a not-too-easy driving record. I usually launch her about 2x per week, albeit from a rather easy 3K to 4K RPM and using a slip-method - but even now, after having launched her about a dozen times from the 5K to 6K mark (also using the slip method), I'm barely getting "stink" from launching that aggressively. It's been about 14 months since I "went Stage II."
I'm not disagreeing with you, DM, that a stock clutch will hold even well through "Stage II," it's just that definitely, for some of us, such a replacement is not necessarily indicative of mis-use. :)
I wish I could better help you on your research, Randy, but bro, this is one area where I've not yet looked deeply enough to feel comfortable giving out any advice. Best of luck!

When we get back to the US we are considering having clutch work done also. Once you have the work done please post up your opinion of the results.

Fixed.
I used act2600's in my DSMs, and was very pleased with the product overall. The last car went thru 2 clutches, and I launched it from 6000-6500 rpm well over 200 times (track, non-track, owning rednecks etc) in my 12.1 second daily driven car.
I also used a centerforce dual friction on one of the DSMs, which had less clamping force (2200 lbs vs 2600 lbs, perhaps?) and a very close to stock pedal feel. It didn't stand up to the launches like the 2600 did, but was a great street part.
$0.02 worth.

^ And I am also an openly declared member of the DSM/ACT-2600 fanboy club. :)
I've got nowhere near the experience that brother john here has on DSMs, but I thought I'd just share my enthusiasm.

I agree with you. If they are already opening it up you might as well upgrade while they are in there.

Plenty of people have done it, you're pretty much guarnteed a replacement clutch before warranty runs out. :shrugs:

My clutch has held at "Stage II" to "+" for a little over a year and 2 months, now. This is with two tuning weekends thrown in, too.
I'm not all that easy of a driver, either - there's about a dozen or so 5K+ (and probably one or two 6K+) slip-launches on her, and I typically launch her about twice a week, usually from between 3K to 4K RPM, slipped, of course.
The only thing I never do is launch her back-to-back.
So far, the only times that I've incurred the "clutch stink" are my two rather unintentional 6K launches.
Again, I don't think that our clutches necessarily have a problem holding typical "Stage II" or even "Stage II+" power-levels, and I think there's enough brothers and sisters on .com to further add merit to this observation.
However, at the same time, it is also undeniable that - especially some of us '05 owners - got stuck with sub-par clutches from the factory, and that, combined with either how hard the clutch is used or even sheer blind bad-luck has made for an early-demise for several LGTers', especially at this power level.
I don't think that "Stage II" necessarily dooms an LGTer to a new clutch - but at the same time, I also don't think that a clutch upgrade, at this power level, is something that I would say would be un-necessary spending, either.
If you've gotta get the old one out of there, and if the Mod Gods don't see it fit for you to be able to get a free OEM replacement, then definitely, having an upgrade in there, ready-to-go, in my mind, is a good thing - both as a precaution as well as for increased driving pleasure.
