According to CNNMoney.com

"But the biggest fuel saver is driving the speed limit and driving sensibly. Rapid starts and stops and exceeding the speed limit will dent your pocketbook. Just by adhering to one of those, the Department of Energy estimates that drivers can save anywhere between 15 and 98 cents a gallon, again assuming pump prices are at $2.97 a gallon."

http://money.cnn.com/2007/05/09/pf/gas_myths/index.htm?postversion=2007051512

Why cant they have tips for guys like me who simply cannot adhere to modern day speed limits, and whose foot must be regularly stomped on either the gas or brake pedal!

:bs: I think they are full of **** and just want to tell people that so they go the speed limit. If the speed limit is 70 and I am going 70 what is the difference if the sign up the road says 55MPH and I keep going 70?? NOTHING. Doing the "speed limit" doesn't make you save on gas......drving slow does. That is what they really meant to say. Did I make any sense there at all??

Bskey

Well,... yeah,... that's about my speed on in town streets. Now on the highway, it's a different story.... :D

I heard it said once that the highways were designed for 90, so I like to test that out regularly, just to make sure they haven't changed anything. For the most part, they haven't so far.

I think that for those of us with modified vehicles, we simply have to seek our own "best economy" when it comes to driving speeds/habits.

I tend to see the highest fuel-economy when cruising at around 75 MPH, which is probably a combination of the stock gearing, the more open intake/exhaust tract, as well as how all of this combines with my current tune parameters.

The car even seems to do better there on a subjective "driving feel" basis.

Bskey
06-21-2007, 06:49 AM
I get the best fuel econimy downhill in neutral, with the wind at my back. Sadly, that's not too often!

SubieChik

You could just put it on a trailer and tow it.......now thats good fuel economy.....maybe not for the truck that is towing it:D

Well, you could imitate that by accelerating to 80, then coast for a while, then repeat.

Then the tickets I would get would more than make up for the savings in gas due to fuel economy.

I agree. I'd rather just drive the way I want to, and be willing to refill the tank a little more often. My GT is just too much fun to drive slowly. If I wanted to drive slowly, I would have bought a non-turbo car.

Actually, come to think of it, I drove fast long before I had a turbo! (just not quite as fast...)

  Read this!

A dub is a wheel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel) or rim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rim) that is 20 inches in diameter. The term dub is a slang term for twenty (Dub Deuce's = 22's, Dub's = 20's).[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] Others believe that the term grew out of the cannabis culture.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] Many people refer to twenty dollars worth of cannabis as a "dub" or "dub sack."[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] Once automotive rims/wheels reached 20" in diameter, people begin to refer to the wheels as doves, and later "dubs."[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] There are many regional terms for expensive, aftermarket wheels, such as "feet" in Florida, "blades" in Texas, and "grown men" in the American South.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] The term "grown men" refers to the American law that makes males "grown" at the age of 21 (they can drink alcohol and attend most nightclubs).[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] If the wheels are 21 inches or more, they can be considered "grown men." Rims 30 inches or bigger can be considered TUBS.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)]
Some can be chrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_plating) or polished aluminum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminum)-alloy. Rims that are below 20 inches in diameter are referred to as sub-dubs, though this term maybe regional.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] "Dub-caps" refer to inexpensive, cheaply made 20 inch wheels marketed towards those who can not afford higher end models."

Can you imagine telling your buddies that your going to purchase some "grown men".

I was also thinking what SubieDriver did- but the other thing that got me was how grainy the driveway seems to be, as well as the HUGE driveway expansion strip. It just doesn't quite look "right" to be a real car.

However, I guess the front door could have such ill-fit if the guy decided to fit one of those aftermarket vertical-door kits.....

SubieDriver
10-05-2007, 10:35 AM
Look closely at the difference between the front and rear door gaps. The front gaps are too large to be real. The rears look molded in.

Check out the brake rotors - no calipers, no texture on the rotors.

Check out the hood hinges - if they were life-sized, they would be way oversized for that hood.

It's a toy.

TSi+WRX
10-07-2007, 11:33 AM
^ I dunno - but whatever it is, it's reading a lot faster road-speed than what a factory USDM LGT can accomplish.

Even on a car with a "relaxed" governor, I don't think anyone who is stock has seen over 140 MPH, road-speed. And even if this guys tires were truly that much "bigger" in diameter, I'd still wager to say that there's no way to see over 150 MPH on a stock car....and that's way below what that speedo spun-over to on the KPH scale.

I wonder what's been done to that car, exactly. ?

Dookie
10-07-2007, 12:09 PM

Was it even a GT? No hood scoop. It had a 6 gear manual though.

It's most likely a 3.0R - most other markets can get it with the 6MT, unlike USDM.

If we could get that here, I'd make my own Legacy STI. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to turbocharge it...

I was drooling over the 3.0R w/ 6MT for almost a year before decided I couldn't wait anymore, so I broke down and bought my GT last year. Then, a few months later, I heard they were finally bringing it here. By then I was already addicted to the torque of the turbo, so I didn't regret my decision at all.
Now, if they turbocharge that six and bring the 6MT...:evilbanana::D

Anyone here know why Cobb chose to supercharge, instead of turbocharge, the H6-equipped Tribeca?

My guess is because of the wimpy torque the 3.0 has. Add a turbo and you still have wimpy torque down low. The Tribeca isn't light, and benefits from the instant-on torque of a supercharger.

Another possiblity could be space too. Most 6's require 2 turbo's to run efficient which requires more piping and tuning. Slapping on a supercharger is a more efficient way for a larger engine, with limited space.

I believe Jeff Perrin only used one turbo when he shoe-horned the 3.0 into the Impreza STI last year. I'm sure it was a monster turbo though.

I agree that two turbos would be more efficient, as you want the pipes from the heads to the turbo to be as short as possible to minimize heat loss enroute, but our current GTs only have one, so the 3.0 could get by with one just as easily (though it would need to be a bit bigger).
