From a fellow countermeasures enthusiast ( nautica2o3 on RD.net ), whose friend is local to the unlucky RX7 owner/driver:
[ note that this quote was from nautica2o3's friend ]
A vendor (to be unamed at this time) sold him the wrong threaded spline drive lug nuts. They were apparanelty fine thread instead of course (this was the observation of at least one participant there who is a professional mechanic). They threaded on ok, and held torque, but when he went into the first turn, the front passenger wheel came off, then followed quickly by the other 3 as the car lost balance and unevenly applied pressure the the other corners.
After the car was lifted up and and the stock wheels and nuts put on, the underside looked ok, it rolled, started up and was driving to the paddock area to wait for a flatbed. It looked like the rotors took the brunt of the fall. The fenders and 1/4 panels are all dented.
My musclecar buddy and I still can't comprehend how this happened - our initial thought was that there's no way the lug nuts would've threaded-on enough to engage the rims, much less held torque.
But we both still thought that this was *possible*, however unlikely we thought it might've been.
Man, now I've seen *everything!*
NALegacy
06-14-2007, 04:40 PM
If it truly is like explained above, he must have stripped the **** out of those lugs...and I'm sure there's no way those went on easy if they were two different thread patterns. I know enough to know that if it's different threads=usually much cross-threading:eek:
Bskey
06-14-2007, 08:03 PM
Evin if they were mad cross-threaded, I dont see how this could have been done unless it was just hand tightened, which is tough if it was in fact hand tightened.
Dookie
06-14-2007, 10:24 PM
Cross threaded was not the issue here. It appears he took off his street tires then slapped on this race tires. After he dropped the car he must have been distracted by something, causing him to forget to torque down the lugs. I've see this happen before, except luckly his rims didn't fly off. Just lost 2 lug bolts out of 5.

Yeah, this must have been quite a rare occasion!
STEye
06-19-2007, 06:56 PM
If they were indeed a different thread, wouldn't you feel it when you tighten the nuts down? I guess you might not if you were using some sort of impact wrench. Either way, it sucks.

^ Anna, myu 17-month old, is an imminently trainable "dog" nowadays. :p
I'll ask her "Anna, what do you do for a living?" - and she'll reply with: "I'm a Ninja!" ( Complete with faux-Asian accent, since she's still got "toddler speak" and all :lol: .)
The trick is completed by the follow-up of me replying with "Really?! Well, how's the pay? Is it good?" - to which she's trained to respond "No, the hours are brutal!"
:lol::lol:
Infant Ninja? Check!
Oh, BTW, that's Anna below - definitely *not* in her Ninja outfit, but with a full-on "war-face," nonetheless. :o

I like to consider myself low maintenance.......I don't need to wear makeup, doesn't take me 2 hours to do my hair or get ready. The only thing I have to do is get my nails done. :D Other than that, everyone says I am a girly girl, but I get that is the first impression I give. :cool:

^ OMG, that's priceless!!!!!! :tup::tup:
For the longest time, Anna was afraid of the noise that her Fisher Price "Tot Rod" made.....so much so that she wouldn't even go near it. :lol: But now, she loves it, although she still asks to "Anna drive DaDa car." :p She likes it when I stand her on my lap, and free-rev a little, in our driveway.
TSi+WRX did you teach your daughter that ninja face?? She looks like she learned well :)
:o Yes, that's her "war face," and she does make it on-command (yet another of her doggie tricks).
But honestly, SubieChik and Bskey, I have *NO CLUE* why she threw that face on when she got on "Anna Harley" that afternoon. :confused: I think she just felt being like a bad-ass, for whatever reason that's in her little brain. :confused:
