There is japanese models with a different face that allows a regular DIN unit to be used. There is some modifying involved.

You can now get the US spec face plate for the cubby (now that the us gauge pack is available)
I got the JDM one in mine, just used a few washers to get it to angle the right way.
We also made a 3 way adapting wiring harness, so that going back to the stock setup is just a matted of plugging stuff back in, easy peasy

I know there was one guy over at .com who took the radio apart, cut up the circuit board to to keep the A/C controls and have a spot to mount a double din unit where the stock radio went. uber complicated though

Geez, the problem with a regular headunit up top is that....you'd have a butt load of useless space where the old radio is located....

I just got a loaded GT with Navigation. I would like to replace the radio but I am leasing the car so no matter what I do, I can't cut up anthing. Were any of the solutions posted here done without cutting anything?

Read post # 3.
I was just at my local audio enthusiasts store and found out about a system from JL Audio called CleanSweep that will allow you to add external iPods or satellite radios AND improves the performance of the factory installed system. You can see how they added it to a GT here: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/gallery_pages.php?page_id=191

If you mean the nav. area, just go to your local subaru dealership and order the Nav. equipped cars center vent area. Or go online and probably find it cheaper at one of those sites like subaruparts.com or such.

So is that a YES the top Subaru Part takes excatly a double din perfectly? Anyone have mounting pictures and such?
And I have been searching, where can I find more info about integrating it with the factory stereo and such. People keep on mentioning weird cables and such....

AC and I are putting in this one once I get around to figuring out how I am going to wire it. It has been sittign in my office for the past two weeks. I have not even checked to see if the wiring harness and all that matches up. I have been to busy with the new job. I am taking the manual (http://www.dualav.com/i/product/manual/xdvd8181.pdf) home tonight to look over it though.

I am not sure what I am going to do with the stock unit. Hook it up to AUX? I have no idea. I am not a stero guru.
