View Full Version : So is it possible to repair semi-solid forged SSRs?

:( Like the title says? is it possible? I hit a pothole/pipe:confused::eek: and bent one rim, and blew out two tires. Will it even be possible to repair that rim? Very minor bend, but a bend that will let air out slowly...

Damn that sucks NA, sorry to here that. Have no idea about forged rims. Found several wheel repairs on the net, here's one that looks good. Give them a call and see what they say and let us know.

Update: The rim is irrepairable. I'll have a useless piece of high-end metal:tdown:. Luckily, I was able to find someone willing to part with another set of these for a decent price, so I might have the car back to the way it was...the stock rims and tires on the suspension i'm running is ridiculous...so dinky:lol: This next time around...i'm going meatier tires....255/35s...should be a very nice look. Hopefully it won't be too much tire for the rim, and will keep from me getting a sloppy ride...cus that would suck...

Awww that sucks man, sorry to hear about it. I'm kinda in the same boat with ya, I've clipped a corner once and tweek one of my rims. The tire shop couldn't balance it because of it. If I place that rim up front I get a nice vibration throught the steering wheel. At least it still a stocker. Makes me look forward to some nice rims as soon as my OEM tires are bald.

If you get those tires on, please post some pics. I'd like to see how they look.

yeah...damaged rims suck. If these were my stock wheels, I don't know how the rim would have fared. It might have been ok because of the cushioning from the higher profile tires, or might have obliterated the rim b/c I'm sure they aren't anywhere near as strong....
As far as the tires going on, it'll be a couple of weeks before I can get everything sorted, pending the deal on those rims goes through. Hopefully he will part with them. If not, a no go on everything:(. If you want to see some pics on a similar setup, check out Claw's journal, although my setup will look a bit different since my suspension setup is different and my rims are wider. He is running some 255/35s on 18x8s. Although I personally wouldn't have done that setup, it shows that it should not be an issue at all. Now if I can afford some 17x9s...like DriftMonkey and myself have been drooling over...:) 265s here we come. I don't even know why I need anything this aggressive. I've got no powah!

Dude, sell your bent rim on ebay. Of course you would tell the buyer it is bent, but someone will buy it! Trust me, I sold a tire with a damaged sidewall, and clearly stated the damage, and showed pictures!

Hmmmmm, my bro just dropped his bent SSR comps at a shop to get fixed. They said they could fix it, but when we put them on something was not right. The shop is taking another stab at fixing the rim. What was the reasoning the shop told you it was unfixable?

STEye

Sometimes when they try to bend back wheels they crack.. Not sure if that is the case with Semi-solid forged wheels, but I know that is with some aluminum wheels.

They said they could fix it, but could not guarantee the rigidity of the rim anymore. It was not a minor bend in their opinion, and required more heat than would be okay for a forged/semi-forged rim. If you were to fix it, and hit another pothole of the same caliber, it may result in absolutely horrible results:tdown: I just wasn't willing to take the risk, and the shop is very well-known and reputable, and said they weren't willing to take such a risk either...

and an update on my situation:
The new(used) rims arrive at the same above-mentioned shop tomorrow. They will be cleaned up to like-new, and then it's time to mount my new tires on them.:D

I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but if they weren't able to get it "right" the first time, they just made the rim even weaker by attempting to "fix" the repair. The comps are for sale all over the place, I would recommend he pick up a new/used one. My rims are really hard to find, and I was able to find some. He would have much better luck finding one. Peace of mind and safety is worth the extra couple hundred dollars spent...

Thanks all. The rim did not have to go in the oven again, the chump that put them on did not put it on right. It was not on the hub right. if my bro's car was not full of crap, we could have fixed it ourselves.

SSR Comps? I'm looking at a set of 18x8 for my car. How does the 50/51 offset fill the fenders? I don't want the sucked in look. Thanks.

18X8 you should be ok with a 50 offset, 18X8.5 I wouldn't recommend, you may have rubbing issues.

18x8 is a good look. A +45-48 offset will fill your wheel wells a bit better.
On the other hand, I recommend 8.5 because it fills up the wheel wells nicely, if you have coilovers. You will need more camber adj. than the stock suspension gives you.

I agree, 8.5 with a 46 or maybe a 48 offset looks nice. Plus you'll have more contact on the pavement.

Darn, I don't have a choice with the offset because I'll be picking the rims up used. No coilovers...yet. So the car might have a funny offroad look to it. Going to use the rims to auto-x next season. I'll get coilovers after I learn to drive better...or save up the extra loot. Whichever comes first...

Dookie

If you plan on auto x, stick with the 17's or go down to 16's. This will give you better gearing and better spool up coming out of corners, than if you had 18's on.

do your wallet a favor and buy wider 17s for autox:lol: get some 17x8.5 rotas...there are some ssr comps to be found...or wait for rota/subydude to release the 17x9s:tup:

Thanks for the additional auto-x info. I was actually looking at Rota Boosts, Torques and Tarmac IIIs. Decisions, decisions. Anyway, I'm being a little greedy -- gonna slap summer tires on the SSRs so they'll improve things during auto-x while I like the 18s from an appearance standpoint. The SSR satisfy that criteria. Maybe those 17x9 rotas will be available after my skills improve and I'm looking for a pair of dedicated auto-x tires.
