I don't know if you have ever driven on lincoln Drive to Kelly Drive but it is perfect for our cars.
Great twisties and even better scenery & to top it off the turbo was breathing great with loads of tourque

When I went back to New York it was a nice drive because of the weather. It was a nice change compared to here. When we made the pitstop at the in laws in Philly/Wilmington it was a little warmer than New York, but not as warm as here.

Hey, has anybody tried to plumb the intercooler piping to the A/C unit? Turn on the A/C, and instant intake cooling! Not sure if the A/C could keep up, but I think it would be worth a try.
One of you guys should try it and let me know how it works out... :D

The low pressure line would be post-expansion, and would already be warm, wouldn't it?

I've been thinking of this project for sometime now. This is how my trial prototype would be setup.
1 can of wart removal spray (sounds funny, but that stuff freezes)
Piping
sprayer
Still figuring out how to dispense it while driving.
My only concern would be if it's to cold, could it crack the IC if it's hot.

Hmm, good idea! You could also try cans of compressed air. If you hold them upside down, the liquified air comes out, and that stuff gets cold, fast!
Those you could probably inject right into the air stream, since it's only air...
Have a cable run from the engine compartment into the cabin, and have a little pull ring in the dash. It could work great!

I'm gonna try to rig up something in the next few days just to see if it works. Even if I have to hold the can in my hand to despense it while driving. It's been 100 degrees out here, so I should feel some sort of difference if it works.

^ You're right - I think - I'm no HVAC guy (which is why the "I think" ;)), and have only added HFC134a into my DSMs (and replaced a condenser :( .....), into the low-pressure side, but I do believe that you're correct indeed, that post-expansion, it wouldn't work well at all. :p :D  :o. Thanks for the catch, and apologies for the confusion! :o
-----
Dookie - Like SubieDriver said, "compressed air dusters" will also work. They're actually typically HFC134a, and when you invert them, the liquid phase will come "pouring" out of the bottle.
I'm not completely certain that you'd want to inject those into the air-stream either pre- or post-MAF, though.
Pre-MAF, I would imagine that it'd get metered appropriately, but HFC134a isn't "air," and I'm not sure how this may mess with the air-fuel equation.
Post-MAF, I'd imagine that there'd be a metering issue, but I'm not sure how this would manifest.
Other things that you could use would include paintball CO2 canisters. Either invert standard CO2 canisters or, if you spend the extra few bucks to invest in a "siphon tube/valve" setup for the canister, you can use it right-side-up (think of the siphon tube as a straw that "dips into" the liquid CO2 - when I was active in paintball back in the late 90s, the Montneel Z/MegaZ was a favored "liquid CO2" marker, used extensively in northern areas where the winters are cold).
As for cracking/thermal-damage to the IC, I'm honestly not sure if this would manifest. After all, liquid N2/CO2, used in aftermarket intercooler-sprayers, would be just as cold, if not colder. I am no engineer, and to me, why those types of interfaces/devices does not damage a hot intercooler is something that baffles me. If anyone could explain this, it would definitely be something that I'd appreciate! :o

Just set some dry ice onto the TMIC
It would probably last just as long as the can of spray
Dookie
08-01-2007, 05:38 PM
Dry ice would be nice if you had time to pull over and place it there. You'll be surprised how much those cans could hold. A good spray of 3 seconds would def. get your I/C cold enough, and I bet you could get about 10-12 sprays out of an 8oz can.

Just attach a really long tube to a can of compressed air and run it through the firewall. Use some tape to stick it to your dash or wherever you want, where it will be easily accessible. Or even stick it in the cubby or middle storage bin, or something. VOiLA! Instant intercooler cooling!

Perfect solution! Then you can have a bandolier of spare cans strapped to the back of the passenger seat for easy replacement when one runs out. I think we're on to something here...
With a really long tube, would you run the risk of it freezing inside the tube?

^ This shouldn't happen - I'd guess that it does remain a possibility, but in terms of real-life practice, when extrapolated to paintball, I had never seen that issue come-about.
A lot of us used to run the Z or MegaZ on "remote liquid" CO2, which was feasible as an "all-season" setup if you were on the trigger hard enough to continually feed liquid through the line. Although most favored either braided stainless lines or coated braided stainless (to lessen the chance of paint-breaks on the equipment), some even went so far as to use flexible coiled line (eliminating the need to route the line inside your clothing, and yet still allowed both a low profile as well as excellent flexibility - while also minimizing the chances for paint-breaks).
I'd imagine that if it didn't freeze-up under such conditions, this kind of line-related issue shouldn't manifest.

So far I bought a can of compressed air and a can of wart freeze.
Findings - Wart freeze does not put out enough pressure to run through hoses or pipping, there maybe a regulator built inside the nozzle/can. The can of compressed air so far shows promissing results. When can is flipped upside down a nice cold liquid spray is released with great pressure. Cold enough to freeze my skin like the wart freeze.
Tomorrow I'll test some hoses and pipping.

Update -
I hooked up 4 feet of 1/4" micro tubing to the nozzle. Holy crap.....and it still sprays about 2 feet out the end. When I spray for 3-4 seconds the tubing is ice cold. It would be sweet if the I/C had internal pumbing for a direct hookup, then we could totally freeze the I/C without any external sprayers.
Next step-
Testing different spayers for the best coverage.

So I tested it today.
In order for this to work, the sprayer needs to face directly onto the I/C. The mist is so fine that a second sprayer would be needed to cover most of the I/C. A good 4-5 second spray would def. get a section ice cold, but one problem, it drys up in the same amount of time too. So, in order for this to work, you'll need to be spraying during full acceleration. This could be quite expensive after awhile changing cans, unless I could find a larger bottle like a small NOS bottle and have it compressed.
Final concusion -
It wouldn't be cost effective to use everyday, but could be very effective on track days, such as drag strips.
For now I'm just going to stick with my original setup, water is free.;)
For those interested in an I/C sprayer system for around $20, check out my DIY thread.

Georgians can't drive in bad weather either. They have enough issues when the weather's good.
I learned to drive in snow, sleet, ice, rain, and everything else. When we get a hint of rain here, people just seem to lose their driving skills (what little they had). On the rare occasion that we get snow or ice, watch out, chaos reigns! I find myself weaving in and out of all the other drivers, because they can't clue into the courtesy of slower traffic keeping right, so I find myself doing the slalom around the pokey people just to get anywhere.
It's kinda fun, but also aggravating. It takes twice as long to get anywhere because people just can't drive.

Isn't it funny how the bigger cities get pretty lax on speed control? Maybe it's because they have so much other stuff to worry about. Growing up in a smaller town (60,000), the cops were pretty anal about speed limits. The locals weren't allowed to ticket for anything under 5mph over the limit, but if you went 6 over, watch out!
Down in south Florida, the highway speed limit through city limits was 55, but they didn't even give you a second glance unless you were going well over 80. In fact, they once published in the newspaper that they were going to be really cracking down on speeders, but mainly focusing on those going over 80. Saying stuff like that basically gives people free reign to go 80.
Here in Atlanta, the average is a little slower. People drive 70-75, with a few that go 80 or more, depending on area and time of day (during rush hour, you're lucky to get over 20!).

The MidWest is generally the northern middle states, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. Sometimes North & South Dakota, Nebraska, and Missouri are included.
Anything south of those states is usually referred to as the south, and anything west of them is either the plains states or the west.

To be honest, I only really use DCCD to put the center diff in lock (50/50) when driving in snow. When I autocross, I always leave it in Auto. I figure I'll let the computer decide the proper torque split between front and rear. :p
So, when the DCCD is in auto, do you feel it shifting the torque split from front to rear as you autocross?

Good point. I just wish they'd bring over the computer-controlled center diff to the Legacy. I think it's just static 50/50 split, right? (for manual, and 55/45 for auto)

Not really.. I think when it is in auto, it will give rear bias (35 Front, 65, Rear), which is essentially like putting the DCCD in full rear. It makes adjustments according to lateral G's and steering angle? There is a big thread on IWSTI somewhere.
What is the torque split for legacy's? 50/50 like the WRX?
As far as I know, it is 50/50 for the manual's

Mine was leaking at the ex manifold connection
It was totally draining my low end giddy up
Dookie
12-04-2008, 02:41 PM
That's weird, most UP usually leak at the turbo. When mine leak it made a high pitch whistling sound under full power. I took a flat head screwdriver and bent the inter-ring of the gasket out so it had more rooms to compress and form to the pipes better.
2.5sbd
12-04-2008, 04:49 PM
I had the same high pitch until the weather got colder then it was just more like a loud exhaust because of more leakage

That's weird, most UP usually leak at the turbo....
I think both ends let go equally as often - there was a rash of manifold-to-UP junction leaks in '07, mainly from guys (like me) who use (or used, in some cases, as they decided to switch thereafter) rigid, one-piece UPs.
Some blamed it on the gasket. Crucial's first batch of copper gaskets really got a bad name for this, but having had such (and also knowing of the old hot-rodders around me, who really love copper gaskets), and not having had a leak *after* I PROPERLY performed my installation, I honestly believe that it's as much an issue of installer error as well as an exacerbation of unique-vehicle/unique-parts related manufacture and assembly tolerances.
Dookie
12-05-2008, 03:18 PM
Oops!!:o My bad, don't know what I was thinking when I said connection to the turbo. Your correct, it was the connection to the manifold.

TSi+WRX
12-07-2008, 02:38 PM
^ I think we all have had that problem, at one time or another, bruddah. :)
My first attempt let go about 9 months or so after the install. As with a lot of other folks using even the second-generation Crucial copper gasket, I ended up with a small, and gradually worsening, leak.
With my second attempt (using another Crucial copper gasket), I made *double sure* to re-tighten everything after a couple of heat cycles.
It's now been over two years, and I've yet to have a recurrence of the problem. :)

CLIFFS:: I WIN!
So, This PT "Bruiser" Turbo gets on my ass on a highway with a 75 mph limit, and i was going 79 mph, in the left lane, passing cars that are going 70mph!
I had my little brother with me after I pick him from from college to take him home, which is a 1.5 hr drive. It's dark out, and he is asleep, and it is 32*F outside. I decide to see what this "Bruiser" has got. I stay in 5th, and roll on the throttle, and away I go~
His headlights start getting smaller and smaller, as if he wasn't accelerating with me. So i slow back down to 79 mph and pull over to the right lane, and the PT FLIES past me, at least 85 mph... Then the FUNNIEST **** happens.
The PT cruiser hits A small bump from a bridge and the right side taillight assembly Falls off the car and hangs by the wires. It starts smacking the car left to right, and I guess the driver heard that, cuz he slamms his brakes. That **** was so funny though! the lights were going back and forth, and when he hit his brakes, the bright lites were going back and forth...
Then he slows WAY down, to like 50mph. I keep at my cruise controlled 79 and pass him. THen 2 minutes later, HE FLIES past me again with the tailight assembly still hanging and dangling and going left to right from the wind. PUHAHAHA.
Oh, and a stupid mustang wanted to race me in freaking traffic. Stupid loser. He was behind me, and I only sped up for a brief second to pass a car that was going like 77 mph, compared to my 79 mph, BUt i guess that was fast enough to think i was worthy of a race with him...
Wow I like writing long stories...

Hey man! I traded in my '05 when they had that fire sale back in Nov/Dec. They gave me 2k over what my car was worth, plus the 7k off MSRP. It was a deal I couldn't pass up! I do miss my old STi though, there was a certain "rawness" that the '08 doesn't have. However the new car has much more refinement!
I have been slow to mod it (only been 6 months lol). So far, I have: Invidia Catted DP, Cobb AP, RCE "Regular guy" springs (Just put them on yesterday), and Volk RE-30. I will hopefully have swaybars soon! Here is a pic of my car in action:

U just runnin a Cobb OTS map?
Funny I never noticed it b4 but the mirrors on the '08 STis look the same as the '08/'09 LGTs.
What's that thing above your windshield?
Milk
Eggs
Bread
That is all.
On the street I roll with the normal OTS map. I want to get it tuned eventually, but I think (hope) I should be ok for the time being. The thing above my windshield is a bullet camera that I have hooked up to a recorder. I really like the mirrors since they have a blinker on them, a nice bonus IMO.

Looks good STEye! You should post your video here so we can check out the STI's actions.

Here is one from last weekends event. For the first 3 runs I shifted to third on the straightway, and the last two I kept it in second. The later runs netted a better time.

I love the looks of the new STI.
I was drooling over one, at the dealership the other day.
When/if they bring a semi-auto to the mix, I think I'll be sold.
Either that, or they finally bring a true Legacy-STI to the States.

+1 on the LGT-STI. I would love to have an STI, except it's too small for our family. Need the extra room for car seats and diaper bags.:o
