They actually aren't that bad at all when pretty new. As they age, however, they already begin with little tread depth, so they become leary the balder they become.
I've never had a problem until they become really bald...then again most tires would give you that problem if you were to ride them that long...RT615s just start with less tread depth and wear fast due to the compound.
Do I comprimise wet performance? I'd say so, when they start wearing thin, but the performance trade off when dry outweighs it for me, personally.

Thanks for that very frank assessment, DM. :)
Do you street-use these tires as well? If so, would you mind giving me a break-down of percentage AutoX -vs.- street use, and also, an estimate of the mileage you have had with them in the past?
I'm considering these for when my Kooks go. :)

I'm considering these for when my Kooks go. :)
I street use the tires, and have good luck, although it seems they heat cycle quickly and the compound hardens quickly, but it usually by the time they need to be replaced anyway. I've autoX'd a couple times on them, as well as done a track day and have gotten about 20k or so off of them, with bad alignments. I'd say 20-30k is possible, depending on how hard you drive on the street and your alignment.
Between the kook RS2s, and the 615s, the falkens give much more dry grip and corner stability as it has a stickier compound and harder sidewall, but the RS2 is probably a better street tire considering it's wet performance, and the Kuhmo MX are also a good choice, similar to RS2s.
The tire I'm really intrested in trying are the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01Rs. They look like the best mix of what both RT-615s have to offer, along with the wet performance of RS2s/MXs. They need a 255/40/17 size for me though, and they cost a little too much for my tastes...but look like an excellent tire that I would recommend.
What tire size do you run BTW?

Hey bro,
I'm 225/40/18, on 18x8 PFF7s.
I had sorta wanted to try out a 245/35/18 fitment (with Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s, chiefly as one of my main purchase criteria happens to be straight-line high-speed/highway-speed hydroplane resistance), but being that I'm on a stock-strut/iON (mis)match :o , I didn't want to push my luck and have to deal with rubbing.
Besides, Winky's only your typical "Stage II," and I didn't want to burden her with any more unsprung weight, particularly as the PFF7s are kinda porky, themselves.
Since I don't AutoX or track (which is why I have the blingy Rotoras and are still on the stock struts w/iONs), my chief concern with "summer" tires was just that they'd give me a little extra bit of fun, but with an enhanced wet safety quotient, versus all-seasons, when we do get our occasional torrential summer storms. As you well-said, treadwear/tread-depth is the enemy here - regardless of the ultimate tire choice ( although, of course, some tires are just more "street and wet-conditions friendly" than others :) ).
Brother ih8vtech13 highly recommended the MXs, as did a local Subaru enthusiast whom I trust implicitly. However, their reports of that tire being quiet, even as they start to break-away, did discourage me from going that route - as I wanted a bit of "hey, you're being an idiot" kind of protest from the rubber. ;) Certainly, both reported that the breakaway of the MX is very controllable and easy to modulate, however, I truly wanted a bit more of an "idiot light" setup, hence the final choice of the RS2s.
I hope that my RS2s will last me about 20 to 30K miles, particularly as I don't AutoX/track nor drive too aggressively at all. About two and a half summers is all that I really ask of them - and if at that time, nothing new on-market is available, I think that I'd then try out the 615s, and just back-off a bit more in the wet. :)

245/35/18 will fit fine, shouldn't rub at all. This is semi-dependant on wheel offset, but I don't forsee any problems running that size. However, competition grade rubber is hard to find at that size. If you want that size, I'd highly recommend Falken FK452s, a very good summer tire with above average wet grip.
I ih8vtec jumped on the MX boat after seeing the awesome deal they were having at tirerack at the time, and I highly recommended them to him, especially for under $100 a pop for 225/40/18! They're sitting at 109 a piece now though, however, which is still a great deal for the tire you're getting.
It's hard to beat the RT615s bang for buck for total dry grip...and it's my personal opinon that you shouldn't me pushing the car so hard in the wet to let the tires determine your overall safety. I've never had a problem with them, and if you don't drive like an idiot when they start wearing down, you'll be fine. :)
The RE-01s are far out of reach, as are the Advan Neova AD07s, based on pure price. A quick check on Tire Rack shows RE-01s are going for $193.00/per for 225/40/18 and the AD07s a cool $259.00/per...not exactly how much I'd be willing to spend to try them out.

Agreed. I knew, academically, that the 245/35, on my particular suspension and wheel-offset setup, should've fit, but I just didn't want the hassle of having something strange happen, and having to deal with this. :p :o
I'd honestly looked into the 452s, as well as the GS-D3s and T1-Rs, with this fitment.
The 452s were recommended by a local WRX owner. Although an aggressive street-driver, he also openly confessed to lacking much experience in terms of "summer tires" - that, combined with less-than-stellar reviews from others who've had more sets of dedicated summers under their belts (not only limited to .com, but also via again my local Subaru community and even the lucky run-in I had with a fellow speed-detection countermeasures enthusiast, who had these tires - as well as the GS-D3 and PS2s, in the same fitment, on his AUS-spec LGT), eventually turned me away from them, despite my having wanted a "fatter tires" look and their excellent price-point (not to mention that I've been a devoted fan of the ZIEX ZE-512s as my "winter" tires).
Totally.
They're still favorites among the local crowd, despite being "past technology," they still work very, very well for aggressive street-driving. I would've gone with these tires, had their "really quiet behavior" not been something that I finally elected to stay away from.
Given a different set of purchase concerns (here, one of mine was that I'd sometimes have the baby in the car with me when I'd like to have some fun - after-all, Anna likes high-G kind of stuff   , thus, I wanted the extra "aural safety buffer") - i.e. I wanted a set of tires that'd keep me out of trouble with the law, when it comes to "display of speed" concerns - the MXs would've been a no-brainer.
...and it's my personal opinon that you shouldn't me pushing the car so hard in the wet to let the tires determine your overall safety.
TOTALLY agreed.
I've never had a problem with them, and if you don't drive like an idiot when they start wearing down, you'll be fine. :)
I'll definitely log that and keep that in-mind - when I go to the 615s, which is definitely likely, on my next go-around! Thanks! :)

Since I don't AutoX nor track, again, I find myself in a situation that I totally agree with you. To me, the extra dollars spent would simply go to waste, since I wouldn't drive the car nearly aggressive enough on-street to see any kind of difference. :o

So... i am thinking... 235's should be wide enough for just daily driving, and the once in a while spirited driving, but i never auto-x or track it.
and the wheel should be 17x8 or 18x8 (no difference in how flush it will look right?) with +45 to +50 offset? I am leaning more toards +45 cuz that will make the wheel stick out more... right?
Ugh... would like some professional advise.

Have a wheel/tire shop fit one to your car and see what it looks like. If it's a little wide you can roll the fenders.
