Exclamation 06 LGT with factory blown turbo. I need help

My 06 LGT just blew it's 2nd factory turbo today. I'm pretty upset. The first one was covered by the extended warranty I purchased when I bought the car used. It is on stage two with a catless downpipe. I'm just wondering if the stage two set up might be the cause of the continuous turbo problems. I had the turbo replaced on december 26th and now here we are on January 12th with the same problem. Any ideas? I need some help.

Whats the mileage on your vehicle and who installed this current turbo?
I would think less than 30 days and its blown already they would have 2 replace it again or I would say get a lawyer.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. But it seems to me that the turbo itself might not be the cause of the problem. To me, SOMETHING is leading the turbo to fail. Either clogged oil/coolant lines or something like that. I doubt that a stage 2 setup can cause the factory turbo to fail, unless you are way overboosting it.

It has about 58'000 miles. Mark Miller Subaru in Salt lake installed it. I monitor the boost and it certainly isn't over boosting. It's hitting the stage two target of 16.5 and tapering to 13 like it's supposed to. And the reason I posted this is because I'm starting to think it's not the turbo as well. I thought the first one was a fluke. This one on the other hand...

Question

Oh and another thing. My clutch is on it's way out. Any recommendations on a new clutch/flywheel set up? I'll be stage two for a while so I don't need anything real extreme.

This is a longshot but do u still have the factory catted uppipe?
What reason did they give for the 1st one 2 fail?

They didn't give me a reason. I did yank the DP off to look in the turbo housing and the turbine was free floating. I do have my stock uppipe on.

They usually say "oil starvation" is the cause but I would definitely wanna know if they say its the same thing again.
Its possible your uppipe cat is breaking apart but its not likely. (I would replace it just 2b on the safe side, plus u get better performance neway.)

Why does the uppipe even have a cat? Would that also be considered the pre stage cat? If so the dealer replaced it about 6 months ago. I'm also on my 2nd motor and soon to be third turbo. I love this car but it has made me not want to buy used ever again. At least the dealer has warrantied everything. I'm just tired of my car being in the shop. It also makes me think twice about nodding it.

What?!?!? 2nd engine and 3rd turbos?!?! Kind of makes you wonder what the original owner did to the car to create such a mess.


In regards to the clutch, I've read most members at stage II still use the same stock clutch assemble, but if you're looking for a beefy setup, several members use ACT clutch systems and like it.

Wow - the car sounds to be in rough shape. Do the '06 LGTs have the catted uppipe?

There are 2 reasons I can think of for premature turbo failure. One is oil starvation due to the clogged banjo bolt filter, the second is if the 06 has a catted uppipe, perhaps the cat is coming apart and the turbo is ingesting these broken off pieces of cat converter.

Regarding the clutch, stick with OEM. I am making around 400 awhp in my '05 and am still on the original stock clutch at 56k miles. I need to replace it soon, and I do baby the car (never, ever launch it) and the stock part is still holding the power.

If you are bound and determined to swapt the clutch, an ACT pressure plate with an 07+ wrx flywheel seems to be the combination of choice. When I do replace mine, it will be with those parts.

2nd motor and 3rd turbo - that's scarey. Did the previous owner have the motor swapped or did you? What caused the motor to let go?

^ Agreed w/brother john on the clutch.

If you don't beat on it (i.e. launch it) much, and if you are most interested in keeping the factory level of NVH, the OEM setup, with dual-mass fly - even given its expense - is the way to go.

The ACT HDMM clutch plus '06/'07 single-mass WRX fly kit, adding the TSK3 "TranQuil," is indeed a popular option, and will hold "Stage III" power levels (< 400 wHP) just fine, but there are unresolved noise issues (which are supposedly addressed by the TSK3 kit, but there are varied reports on LGT.com as to "consistency" of effectiveness, if you will, with some people seeing problems, but others, not, with now at least some evidence from NASIOC reports that it may be a unique-vehicle issue).

Other options, such as Spec, are somewhat less popular, and thus do not have the necessary sampling size to truly determine if there could be potential issues (remembering that the issues with the ACT were not immediately apparent, until more LGTers started reporting in).
