Default Spark Plug Walkthru W/PICS!!!!!!

Finally got around to doing the spark plugs. If this is your first time, allow yourself at least 2 good hours to complete. Take your time and don't rush!

Tools you'll need. OEM spark plugs NGK Laser Iridium SILFR6A.

Remove engine cover.

Remove Air Box & Hose. 3 bolts on air box & loosen hose clamp.

Air box removed.

Coil paks - I labeled them 1 & 2 on passenger side and 3 & 4 on the driver side for reference. Use a 12mm socket to remove the coil pak bolts.

It's a tight fit to remove these bolts, just use a plain ratchet and 12mm socket to loosen them. Then take the ratchet out and finish loosening them by hand to avoid getting the ratchet stuck.

Pull coil paks off and you may have to rotate the #2 pak around to slide it out. Don't pull on the wires, only the pak itself. I only held the wire for a better pic position.

Move the paks out of your way.

Removing the spark plugs.

There's a few ways to remove the plugs, I'll explain 2 ways.
One, using the short extension bar. Second, using the swivel Joint.

Extension bar.

Place the socket and extension onto the spark plug 1st. Then attach the ratchet. On spark plug #2, you'll have to place the socket on 1st, extension bar 2nd, then the ratchet. Once you have loosen the plug, remove the ratchet and loosen the rest by hand. Then disconnecting the extension bar in order to remove the socket and spark plug.

The swivel joint method. Place the socket onto the spark plug, then attach the swivel joint with medium length extension bar to the socket.

Spark plug removed. Old vs. new. 35k miles on these old plugs.

Check the gaps with feeler gauges. The new plugs should already be gapped at .030, but always double check them.

Install new spark plugs in reverse order. **Make sure to thread the spark plugs by hand first to avoid any cross threading.

On to the driver side spark plugs.

Remove battery.

Remove coil paks. #3 is faily easy using the same approach from #1 & #2.

#4 is the hard one to remove, because it has less room between the engine & beam. 1st, loosen the coil pak bolt and pull the pak out until it hits the beam.

The easiest way to get it out is by using a large bar, like a jack bar in the pic. and wedge it inbetween the engine and beam.

Pull the bar toward you to push the engine away from the beam giving you and extra inch to pull the coil pak out with your other hand. Close up of bar.

Removal of the spark plugs. Remove #3 with the same approach as #1. Spark plug #4 will require using the swivel joint method, since the space is to tight.

Pic of swivel joint from #2 spark plug.

Install new spark plugs in reverse order. Make sure to thread the spark plugs by hand first to avoid any cross threading. Keep in mind you'll have to use the large bar again to install the coil pak on #4.

What is this about? I went to order plugs from Amazon and it has a handy-dandy checker to make sure that what you're buying fits your car, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

NGK's site lists only a 2005 for SILFR6A. They need to get their **** together.

*edit* Apparently you have to go to ngksparkplugs.com and not ngk.com http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/part_fi...uv/results.asp

Interesting, there shouldn't be any differences in engines from '05 to '06.

Maybe our service advisor "Blackfang" will chime in here, and give use some insight.
