Exhaust Silencer Removal
I wasn't happy with the XT being as quiet as it was. So I decided to remove the exhaust silencer- I used a pipe cutter to score and remove the silencer:
After that, I unbolted the pipe and put it on a bench to start cutting and measuring. I used some simple exhaust clamps and a piece of straight pipe to fill the gap left by the silencer- remember, measure twice, cut once... This is what the silencer looks like: And here it is looking down into it- it's hard to tell from this pic, but the pipe goes straight through and there's a lot of baffling that traps sound. Here's the final product: Impressions: Upon startup, there's a nice little "thunder crack" as the beast comes to life. Once settled into idle, it sounds like it means business without sounding obnoxious. It actually sounds a bit like the Prodrive my buddy had on his WRX. On my own former WRX, I had a Bosal 3" catback on with no silencer and it was loud, obnoxious and droned like crazy. This is nothing like that- no drone, I suspect due to twin mufflers. It's not overly loud inside with the windows shut either, which was a concern. I can't say that it added any power- if it did, it's not much, but it does sound pretty damn good. So overall, 45 minutes worth of work and very worth it. There goes the rest of the weekend project though- I had planned to replace the mufflers, but I'm quite pleased with how the car sounds now and anything louder might be too much. I just did this tonite, we took way over the time you posted here but we got it welded and stuff too. Very hapy with it over all, but disapointed after hearing it with nothing after the 3rd cat.

Yeah, it's like when I changed my downpipe and listened to the exhaust with just the turbo and man it sounded weak with the rest of the exhaust attached

I've done that, but it sounds weird. At WOT, the exhaust hits the ground, then the bottoom of the car and makes this really weird echo.

It will probably make it just a little louder, but what really caps exhaust sound levels is the muffler canisters. Without changing/altering those, it'll be hard to really bring out the "Boxer Rumble."

^^^ Yep. Cans first, then each cat you remove after that will make it just a touch louder.
