Valet key trips alarm
We lost the second key so now I have to use the valet key for everyday ( my wife gets the good key, of course). No big deal, except no remote functions, so have to unlock the door manually. The door unlocks just fine, but the alarm trips upon opening the door, and keeps beeping until putting the key in the ignition, which turns it off. Car starts and runs normally then.
It's a 2011, btw. A curious thing I just noticed is that the valet key works just fine, no alarm going off, if I have the regular key in my pocket while using the valetkey to unlock the door! So there's a transmitter in the key that's always on??? Doesn't seem likely. Any ideas? |

Yes. The factory key is chipped.

Thanks, but doesn't really address the question- why does the valet key trip the alarm and how to fix it?

What Kagen meant to say, is the standard remote key is chipped, and when you are within 10 feet of the car it will deactive the alarm while opening the door. The valet key does not have the same remote chip, and will only deactive in the ignition.
Have you tried unlocking the door 2 - 3 times before opening. Some factory alarm systems will have this feature for this main reason. Can remember if Subaru does, it's worth a try. |

^^^ Thank you.
Note: When I installed my remote start alarm, that included stashing a factory key in the dash so the car could be started remotely. Now I can use any key to start the car. So I wonder if you could have a second "valet key" made, and just stash your factory "chipped" key up inside the dash. Try leaving your factory key inside the car and using the valet key to open it.
